Scope and content (abstract)
The research was conducted at the request of György Péter, president of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, in 1963. The final paper, entitled Social Stratification in Hungary and published in 1966, was written by Mrs. Aladárné Mód, Zsuzsa Ferge, Éva Láng and István Kemény. Within the research project, mobility was Kemény’s own field, and he published his findings in a paper entitled Social Interrelations of Mobility. This series includes the documents of research on social stratification and mobility, primarily study papers.

Notes
The researchers explained social stratification in terms of the place people occupied in the power structure. In a biographical interview, István Kemény underlined that the conclusions of the research were heavily influenced by Max Weber and Ralf Dahrendorf. One of the main findings was that the division of power controlled by the party was in juxtaposition with the historical division of power. Mobility rates primarily depend on the level of development of society, the rate of economic growth and changes in the employment structure, consequently the upward mobility of Hungarian workers into intellectual professions is lower than the Western average.
