Scope and content (abstract)
The Operative Register was a key filing system in the state security services, compiled by the State Security Operative Registry Department, consisting of several sub-systems. The main purpose of the registry was to keep track of persons in the various categories of enemies. The series includes the almost full set of commands, orders, recommendations and reports of the iii/iii department on operative registry, as well as selected files of other registries of the department and other organizations. Furthermore, files on special categories of persons, such as “F” (surveyed), who were especially dangerous for society, members of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party, illegal border crossers, emigrants as well as on various procedures (preliminary control, surveillance) are in the series. Furthermore, the series included statistics on persons in the operative registry, revisions of the registry in the course of which categories of enemies were changed according to orders from the party leadership as a result of which persons in the registry were re-classified. Files on the Soviet KGB registries and exchange of knowledge are in a separate folder. Another separate folder contains the files on the two most important types of files (“O” for operative and “V” for examination) and on the two kinds of cover houses (“K” for conspiracy and “T” for secret).
