Contents Summary
Grissinopoli, a debt-laden grissini manufacturer, falls into bankruptcy and is abandoned by its owners. Against the backdrop of growing unemployment and economic insecurity, the plant’s 16 Argentine workers decide to resist by trying their hand at self-management. This utopian solution, born of desperation, is hard to actually put into practice. Almost immediately, the workers face internal dissension, potential expropriation, a lack of funds and management experience, and the risks of political and union co-optation. At the same time, they experience moments of solidarity, as they struggle with lawyers and lawmakers to pass an expropriation law that would allow them to maintain their plant. Following the tradition of direct cinema, this activist film provides an example of a growing social movement, that has already succeeded in saving more than 10,000 jobs in Argentina.
