- Bastøy is a state prison island located in Oslofjord, Norway. 115 convicted men are doing their time here for a wide range of crimes. Bastøy is the first and only ecological prison in the world. The guards carry no weapons and there are no cells, cameras, or fences. As one prisoner explained, “compared to a closed prison this is heaven. Compared with freedom, this is still hell.” “Bastøy” exposes prison life in a humane institution.
