Scope and content (narrative)
During the decade preceding the Hungarian transition, Tibor Philipp was not only a participant of the events as an activist, but he also undertook the role of a photographer. Pictures of major mass gatherings taken or collected by him are widely known, and these became frequently quoted sources and references in discussions about the history of the regime change in Hungary. Most of the original images are included in this part of the collection. Some of the photos and negatives in the series document the activities of the Group Inconnu and the opposition movements. Several of these were taken at demonstrations and other events organized by the Group Inconnu, and many were taken at illegal commemorations held in private homes. The series includes photos taken at the demonstration against the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros Barrage System on September 12, 1988, the commemoration of October 6, 1987, as well as the preparations for the 1989 headstone installation, remembering the martyrs of the 1956 revolution. Several photos were taken at events which were not public but were also closely related to the activities of the opposition, such as Zoltán Zsille's visit to Hungary at the end of 1988. Also, there are several portraits of Tibor Philipp and György Krassó among the materials. Tibor Philipp, István Jávor and Halas István are the identifiable authors of the photos. The vast majority of images have already been published and can be accessed online. The second box of the series contains miscellaneous negatives.
