In conjunction with the Sarajevo Water Project, which brought a complete water treatment plant into the besieged Sarajevo, the Open Society Foundations sponsored a series of other projects in support of the city's higher education system and civilian population.
The Research Support Scheme was meant to aid the education system by giving grants for scholarly research abroad. The Oxford Colleges Hospitality Scheme allowed for short-term faculty visits and scholarships for students, who wanted to conduct research in Oxford libraries or consult Oxford specialists. The book-buying project for the University of Sarajevo provided faculty with the necessary English language books and journals.
The distance learning project involved English language teaching material from The Open University, which was broadcast by Radio Zid. The Open Society City of Sarajevo Project aimed at protecting and preserving Sarajevo as a phenomenon and cultural center.
This series contains the documentation of these projects, among them correspondence, grant files, progress reports and final reports, as well as some background information and press clippings.
