Content and Structure

Scope and Content (Abstract)
This series contains monthly journals published by the Free Europe Committee with articles on political, economic, intellectual trends and events of countries in the ‘Soviet orbit.’ According to editors, “information contained in this magazine is based on analysis of all major Communist newspapers and publications and the monitoring of Communist broadcast. Eyewitness accounts, clearly labelled as such are also used”.

The journals exist in English and also in German language. The English version was published in New York starting in January 1952, under the name “News from behind the Iron Curtain.” In January 1957, it was renamed the “East Europe: A Monthly Review of East European Affairs” and at that time opened up subscriptions to universities and research institutions. Volume 1 from 1952 is missing from the collection. The last issue in our archival collection is from January 1970.

The German version of the journal was first published in Munich in March 1955, under the name “Hinter Dem Eisernen Vorhang” (Behind the Iron Curtain). The name changed to “Osteuropäische Rundschau” (Eastern European Review) as of January 1967, publishing its last issue in December 1972. Although the German and English versions of the journal address the same issues and are oriented to the same public (universities, churches, libraries and research centers), the content and illustrations are not the same.
