His professional career interrupted for political reasons, István Kemény moved to Paris in January 1977. There he contacted Hungarian intellectual émigrés who felt the need for an émigré periodical which wrote openly and objectively about Hungary. Furthermore, it was suspected that intellectuals in Hungary had huge quantities of unpublished writings. Preparations for launching Magyar Füzetek started in 1977, and the first issue came out in 1978. The editor was Péter Kende. The idea of a book series came from well-known Hungarian sociologist Péter Józsa. Kende modeled the publication on János Kenedi’s Profil, which printed writings that were rejected by the official press, mostly for political reasons. Kemény published several studies in Magyar Füzetek, which went on being issued until as late as 1990. Between 1980 and 1990 István Kemény regularly wrote for Irodalmi Újság, which was a literary and cultural political weekly, originally the journal of the Association of Hungarian Writers. It was founded in Budapest in 1950; after the failed revolution in 1956 it moved to Vienna, then to London and finally to Paris in 1962. Its main mission was to print the writings of émigré Hungarian writers and intellectuals. In the Paris period, it came out monthly. Apart from copies of Magyar Füzetek and Irodalmi Újság, the series includes Kemény’s other published writings, mainly in French and English.

During the course of processing no materials have been removed from the series.
