The Sierra Leone collection contains 13 raw and edited videos documenting the fierce civil war that devastated the country leaving more than 50,000 people dead and much of the infrastructure destroyed.
It includes recordings of site visits and interviews, particularly notable being the interviews with victims of the amputation squads and child soldiers detailing the killings and the damage they inflicted upon their communities. Several tapes containing raw footage are witness to executions and the movements of the military and rebel troops.
The collection also features television news, reports and documentaries. The news and reports come from SLBS (Sierra Leone Broadcasting Services), APTV (Associated Press Television News) and ITN (Independent Television Network). Among the documentaries, especially remarkable is Sorious Samura’s striking film “Cry Freetown” which uncovered the horrors of the most brutal period of the civil war in Sierra Leone and changed the way the international community responded to the conflict.
