Contents Summary

Gusztáv Hámos's 47 black-and-white portrait photographs in original, vintage enlargements.

The portraits were taken in four locations in Budapest, at vocational schools and workshops. The black-and-white images depict students of carpentry, inlay making, textile weaving, cooking, waitressing and other catering trades, and are assembled into a photo series.

According to Gusztáv Hámos, he was commissioned by sociologist Mihály Csákó to take the pictures in the winter of 1976-1977. Hámos was 21 at the time. Thanks to the small age difference between the students and the photographer, Hámos was able to communicate easily with the students. He gave them free rein in their choice of location, props, equipment, clothing and pose. Most of the pictures are of a single person, some are portraits of couples, but there are also group shots. Most of the photos were taken in workshops or at workbenches, others in hallways or restrooms.

Hámos used a Weltaflex machine, working on 6x6 negatives, and then enlarged them himself on 18x24 and 6x6 cm paper, as well as docubrom light-sensitive paper. Some of the docubrom enlargements were better than their counterparts enlarged on photographic paper.

It is likely that Gusztáv Hámos took the pictures during the 1st National Apprenticeship Examination, led by Mihály Csákó and Ilona Liskó.
