The Regional Files were created by Silja Haas, a staff member of Information Services Department at OMRI (Open Media Research Institute - Prague, Czech Republic), between the second half of 1995 and the beginning of 1997 with the purpose of providing information about the regions of the Russian Federation to OMRI analysts and RFE/RL. The series comprise information about the Russian regions, their politics, economics, social life, culture and environmental problems. Of particular interest are the files relating to regional elections and development of new regional elite. The files contain clippings from the Russian press - both central and regional, news agency releases, Moscow radio and TV monitoring excerpts. The Regional Files cover the period from the second half of 1995 until the first two months of 1997. Earlier materials are occasional. The files related to the Chechnya war were included in the Former Soviet Union Archives (HU OSA 205-4-201).
