Scope and content (abstract)
The series contains a collection of Polish émigré press, which is very variegated in terms of publishing entity, contents, and connection to the underground political life in Poland, as well as format. The journals collected come from not only the post-Martial Law political émigrés, but also from well establish expat communities (the so called “Polonia”), associations of World War II veterans and similar organizations. Understandably, in case of the latter two, coverage of the dissident politics is not the primary concern. In case of the former, the connection to Polish political counterculture in general, and the underground Solidarity in particular varies from officially affiliated entities like “Biuletyn Informacyjny” edited by the Solidarity Information Bureau Abroad, through different support committees, to independent or largely unrelated groups. Some have a considerable authorial input, while others offer mainly reprints from the Polish underground press. As a general rule, in terms of form and its quality, the émigré publications resemble standard journals, which in case of the reprints from the Polish underground press, has an extra advantage for researchers who find it hard to read the Samizdat originals. However, for various reasons, some of the publications maintain the samizdat form.
