Contents Summary
A documentary on the conflict in Sierra Leone told from the point of view of the members of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and the rebels affiliated with it. Throughout Sierra Leone’s eight-year-long civil war, rebel soldiers have been accused of killing, mutilating, raping, and kidnapping civilians. While there is plenty of eyewitness evidence to support the charges against rebel soldiers, rebel officials say the blame for these atrocities should not fall on their troops alone. Sam Bockery, commander of the RUF, maintains that they are misrepresented by the Sierra Leone government and the Nigerian-led ECOMOG forces (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group, a West African multilateral armed forces) and that while the latter are interested in controlling the mines for their own benefit, the rebels fight for the people and for a state that will invest the nation’s rich mineral wealth into schools and hospitals.
