Series DescriptionFekete Doboz, the first independent Hungarian video-based media organization in the Kádár regime launched a media monitor project in 1989 and created off-air recordings of all the evening news and political programs broadcast on the 1st and 2nd channels of the Hungarian state television, MTV. The programs were recorded on VHS tapes, which were transformatted onto DVD-ROM by Fekete Doboz itself. There are 1065 program items on 569 DVDs The Blinken Open Society Archives received both the VHS tapes and the DVD-ROMs, and created ISO file copies of the DVDs. The files are available for research without restriction at OSA.
The series consists of altogether 1065 Hungarian television news and political programs from the transition year of 1989.
The programs include the first, second and third editions of the daily evening news, Day End News as well as live broadcasts from the Parliament, summaries of parliamentary sessions, and programs that discuss the broader context and analysis of political issues, such as News Background, The Week, Home Mirror, and Panorama focusing on foreign policy. In addition to these, there are broadcasts of important events such as commemorative events of March 15, funeral of János Kádár and a few special news editions and the film portrait of Lazar Barankov, a defendant in the Rajk trial and television journalist Tamás Vitray.
Both the VHS tapes and the DVD-ROMS are in good general condition. The description of this series was based on the ISO image files that were created by using the DVD-ROM discs.
The right audio channel is close to inaudible in many video files.
