Roma Media School, established by the Black Box Foundation in 2001 is a school that offers training in documentary film making and journalism for students with Roma origin or identity. The aim was to train Roma journalists and editors who will bring authentic and positive self-representation into the rather biased, often racist anti-Roma Hungarian media landscape.
During the one-year training the students focused on cinematography, script writing and video editing. In addition to journalism and video technology, sociology, political science, and public speaking was part of the curriculum as well.
The Roma Media School has operated between 2001 and 2004, training ten to fourteen students per year.
The end-of-year project films are the most significant part of the collection. They include award-winning documentary films such as Goose Plucking or Fradi Will Win.
Raw video footage, unedited material documenting life in Hungary in the early 2000s is also part of the series, showing the hard life of people raised in orphanages, living in crisis homes or in the streets. At the same time, a few success stories appear too: Roma young attending a university or having a solid music career.
Officials responsible for the Roma affairs are portrayed as well. A number of television programs show interesting figures from all walks of life.
